Who We Are
Welcome to Sacred Kolors, where tradition meets innovation, and creativity blends with sustainability. Established in West Baltimore’s Upton community, Sacred Kolors was born out of the Upton Planning Committee’s (UPC) research body known as the Natural Dye Initiative (NDI). Sacred Kolors pays tribute to its ancestors who derived a kaleidoscope of natural dye colors. The growth and transformation of organically grown indigo is the primary focus of Sacred Kolors. Our natural indigo products are available for the creation of natural and peacefully vibrant hues of Blue.
Our Mission: Sacred Kolors preserves the heritage of indigo dyeing techniques while promoting environmental stewardship, education, and sustainable economic opportunity. We believe that advancing the use of natural indigo can support quality products, educational engagement, and responsible local enterprise. Our programs, services, and opportunities are intended for broad community benefit and are made available based on mission, program criteria, and capacity.
Why Indigo: Indigo is more than a color. It reflects a long tradition of craftsmanship, natural materials, and connection to agricultural heritage. At Sacred Kolors, indigo represents both tradition and opportunity. Through its cultivation and use, we help preserve valuable knowledge, promote sustainable production practices, and create pathways for learning, creative expression, and product development.
Equal Access Statement
Sacred Kolors provides programs, products, and educational opportunities in furtherance of its charitable and programmatic mission. Participation and access are available based on program criteria, capacity, and applicable law.

The Essence of Indigo
Indigo is more than just a color; it’s a symbol of authenticity, spirituality, and connection to the earth. Derived from the leaves of the indigofera plant, this natural dye has been cherished across diverse cultures for its deep, timeless hue.
Our Approach: Sacred Kolors combines traditional indigo knowledge with modern production and sustainability practices. Our process uses established techniques and responsible methods to produce high-quality natural dyes. We work with local artisans, growers, and partner organizations through collaborative production, education, and sourcing practices that support consistency, quality, and long-term sustainability.
By growing and sourcing indigo through our network of participating farmers and working closely with skilled craftspeople, we help preserve traditional knowledge while promoting practical applications for natural dye products in today’s marketplace.
Environmental Responsibility: We prioritize sustainability at every stage of production. From producing natural indigo extracts to implementing water-conscious techniques, Sacred Kolors works to reduce environmental impact and support responsible agricultural and production practices. Our goal is to demonstrate how traditional methods and modern sustainability can work together to create products of quality and value.
Community Engagement
Sacred Kolors supports education, collaboration, and participation through programs designed to share knowledge about natural indigo, sustainable agriculture, and artisan production. We welcome opportunities to work with educators, growers, artists, community partners, and organizations interested in natural dyeing, cultural heritage, and environmentally responsible practices. Our work is intended to expand access to learning and engagement for a broad range of participants.
Our Products and Work
Sacred Kolors develops natural indigo products that reflect quality, craftsmanship, and care in every stage of production.

The plants are little shrubs, all green leaves about the size of a finger. Indigo Initiative Ramps Up in Baltimore with Building, Incorporates More Fields and Black Farmers
Indigo dye is harvested from the plant that does everything from making cotton jeans blue to giving boots, sneakers, home décor, wood, and leather brilliant shades of blue hues. Before these items can become colored treasures, seeds are needed to grow indigo plants which sprout leaves for harvesting. It may not be foremost in one’s thoughts to imagine that indigo plants have been growing locally in Baltimore [...]
